Moto KRZR Does GPS

Nov 05

The new Motorola KRZR will ship with GPS capabilities and now it’s a matter of determining whether or not it supports JSR-179.  If so, this will open a world of opportunities for application developers.  A perfect example is Thomas Landspurg’s J2ME Map.

Verizon seems to be on the up-and-up when it comes to hot new mobile devices.  It will be interesting to see whether or not they give application developers access to location since it could affect revenue generated from their Navigator service.  Carriers could potentially lock down devices if leaving them open allows developers to create similar (if not better) applications.  I’m an advocate of keeping them open since consumers will be the ones that benefit from healthy competition.  We’ll see whether or not I’m crazy over the next several months.
